Self Development
Whether in business or our personal life, each of us wants to improve our position and have greater control of our actions, decisions and day-to-day life. The difficulty lies in our ability to implement the changes we desire against all the outside "noise" that can suffocate us. Real change comes through commitment, dedication and accountability but most of us feel strong in one or two of these when we start but our best chance for lasting change is to have someone's outside perspective bringing to light the opportunities we may not see until we can make them new practices and behaviors in our routine.
Team Development
The most effective teams are made up of individuals from diverse backgrounds and personality traits. A team with all like members may get along and enjoy working together but if no one sees the importance of answering the phone then the business suffers. Of course the more diverse a team you have the greater difficulty you face in building a positive culture with the right people. When team members see and value each other's skills and roles, then they can work together effectively and "own" their responsibilities while supporting one another.
Leadership
Effective leadership is more than giving direction and communicating ideas. No one is "blessed" in all aspects of business to be the best or considered an expert in each: Plainly said, none of us have all the answers. The best leaders know their weaknesses as well as their strengths and allocate the resources and time appropriately. Are you able to influence others to accomplish the vision you have for the business without your direct involvement? Strong leaders know that future success in business is directly correlated to their ability to increase their leadership skills.
Business Planning
Business planning can be a painstaking time and energy drain. There are events, campaigns and goals that require dates and accountabilities if they are to be achieved but there are some strategies that, while sound good, shouldn't be executed on until a certain level has been reached. Too often, a business plan starts strong only to be abandoned due to an unforeseen obstacle in the marketplace. A good plan will have built in flexibility to drive growth and success without dependency on everything remaining status quo.
Management Training
It can be difficult to know if your top Key Player(s) is ready for the next step. They may provide great value in the role they currently hold for your business but will that increase if you promote them? If you do promote them what will the training look like? What if they don't work out and they leave, or worse, you have to let them go? Before ever venturing down this road you need to complete an assessment and a detailed plan of development to give them and your business the best chance for success. Always remember, a great teacher doesn't always guarantee they'll make a good principal. Like leadership, employees' growth and development should always be a part of a growing business.
Strategic Development
Every business has a strategy. Some are well planned out and executed on. Some represent a general idea of what the goal is and how to get there, and some are just the driving impetus of the owner's idea of success. For a strategy to be effective it needs nurturing. It needs to be communicated, shared, invested in, and followed up on. Strategies die under the weight of the day if not protected and given effort in spite of the day's distractions. Coming up with strategies is the easy part, putting into action is the difference between growth in business and reliving the same issues again and again.
Accountability Groups
One of the loneliest jobs can be being an owner of a business. Sure, you are on the phone all day, in meetings, and talking about ideas and your business, but are you as confident, or as competent, as you act? As an owner, we are expected to know, to be, and to have all the answers that impact our business. As the only voice it's easy to get on the wrong path and not even realize it. Accountability groups bring together owners to share, problem solve, and hold one another accountable for the results each owner desires to see in their business.
As owners, you all share something that no one else can quite understand. You each know what it's like to wonder if you can make payroll? If the business is seen as a value to your market? If you have the right team in place for success? If you have blindspots that are holding you back? and the list goes on. Meetings are so valuable that owners set their business planning around them and feel a sense of "belonging" to something bigger than just themselves and the business they own.
